It's just a trope in this genre and the author kept it in the backhand to use it at their whims.

Here they used it to give the climax of the story another bittersweet note, without any considerable build up.

With how slow this series gets, how little we see and get to know this Machida, I can't even feel sympathetic for her with all this new information we're getting coming out of left field.

If she did something more proactive, maybe I'd pay attention to her more, but at this point, this feels like a pointless attempt to add drama to a slow-burn slice-of-life series
