What do you mean? I'm pretty sure that having paywalled chapters is accepted in MD as long as they're not put on MD as external links.

I'd rather wait a month for the paywalled chapter to become free rather than not getting any translations whatsoever tbh

That's not the real issue, though.

The real issue is that this behavior, no matter how it's handled by MD, is always going to draw the attention of the publishers.

Didn't you ever notice that the vast majority of the stuff MD got copyright strikes for was stuff being uploaded by scans groups trying to make money? In fact, there was even a warning sign before that happened. Remember how there was that sudden wave of scans groups getting their payment system and advertiser accounts banhammered? Yeah. That was more likely than not the publishers putting a shot across the bow.

The best thing for MD to do is to disallow paywalling and panhandling all together. If they do that, then I guarantee that they'll draw less aggro from the publishers, since they'll prioritize going after the people who try to profit off of scanslation first and foremost.

This manga is an adaptation of an WN/LN. And the announcement placed the blame primarily on the mangaka. They even included an apology to the original author and the character designer, too. And the wording of the letter is deeply regretful that they have failed in adapting this story.
