Wait, so they old party clearly knew the dude was a solid team member, and still mistreated him and even sold his sword?... that's dumb.
It would have made more sense if they just merely disliked the guy and were bullying him, perhaps because they're nobles and he is a commoner, but not actively sabotaging their own ability as a party by selling his equipment.
