Yeah, literally "Osananajimi" (幼なじみ). I know it's annoying to see stilted translations, or even entirely made-up lines, but "Osananajimi" is a case of "It's what they're saying; what do you want me to do?"
The alternatives are probably longer, and more stilted, while also confusing the audience more.

When the manga adaption got axed it was because the sales were not going well at least that's what the author of Kuro no Mao said when his work got axed.

Just read panel 19/28 and had to come here to find a coment like this, you dont revive someone with the memory of "i thought of you as a princess and never wanted to be parted from you" to then friendzone her with that "childhood friend" staling bullshit. Its a clear and uterly disgusting way to try to fill a shitty novel that up to that point was pretty good.
