Hell, if she cut her hair short before her last trip to MC's hometown, she might've even been the "boy" he saw kissing Luna back then too.

EDIT: Also occurs to me that this is likely why MC doesn't see any sign of Luna's partner's stuff even though they're over pretty often. He probably can't tell their clothes or stuff apart because he just sees a girl's stuff and assumes it's Luna's.

Also, you don't usually see tattoos on Japanese unless they're from the yakuza, so that also sends even more red flags.

There was (is?) prejudice among japanese against the tattoos for this exact reason. Basically, tattoos=criminal.
Also, the reason why you do not see tattoos in manga (often) might be simply because the artist will have to draw it everytime, which, after a while, might be pain in the ass.

Smoking perception varies a lot by culture and country. I remember like 20 years ago when smoking was already on its way out of style in the US, I was in Paris and smoking culture was still HUGE there. Like there slwere smoking cages with mounds of cigarette butts and ashes out front. Went back to Paris a few years ago and now it's a lot less common.

Japan still has a big smoking culture though, not as bad as Paris 20 years ago but still big compared to a lot of Western countries today.

nah, a lot of alt-girls (and alt-guys too) in japan do tattoos nowadays, it's not that rare now (not as mainstream as in the western countries, but still)

Don't like smoking either, friend of my dad had lung cancer because he smoked a lot, had to have one removed, felt out of breath since, then one day we hear he's fallen through his glass table in his living room and died. =/
