It's getting fucking annoying. Constant overthinking with never acting up on anything. It's just a lines and lines of dialogue with nothing but pointless anxiety. I just speedread this shit now, dialogue has no deeper purpose anyways. The author's one shots were so good but seems like they get lost in long format

Idk, I don't think his expression alone tells enough to tell apart between being sad or confused, it even seems like a neutral face.

Overall the most important thing from this episode is him talking with Kogahara and even that conversation didn't have much meat to it other than giving her more reasons to think those two are in love with each other, which ain't even a new concern for her.

I'm probably in the "he's confused" camp.
I can see it go two ways:

• He's been thinking about this a lot, has been sorting out a lot of feelings, and while he wasn't too sure about it himself, hearing himself being friendzoned by Lemon there might make him realize there was more to it
• He doesn't realize any feelings of his own but is just confused by the mixed signals he's perceiving, like she calls him her best friend but avoids him, and he's sometimes more perceptive than others when she's putting up a front.

I get that it's frustrating for people who want to see progress, but the situation is so messy that I get it takes time to resolve. And it's not just because of misunderstandings, but more complex personality traits, especially with Lemon shutting down, spiraling again, showing that while she's definitely grown, deep down she still has that tendency to sacrifice herself. Often you can say "JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER" but in this specific case, there's so much tension and fear of losing each other (friendship is the baseline) that it isn't that simple.

Also, the author sneakily avoided showing us Kogahara's face when she asked Sunao whether he was afraid of her hating him. Maybe it doesn't mean anything, but...

is it weird to say i hope they stay in the friendzone? male-female friendships as well written as this aren’t all that common in this genre, & if lemon gets a separate love interest it could be a far more interesting story than “we dated when we were teens, broke up over nonsense, reconnected in college & started again”

Sunao assumes Lemon’s wording is objective and accurate, while he was eavesdropping onto his colleague and their boss both. Lemon on the other hand has shown to be acutely aware of and accomodate the atmosphere of a room, and given the conversation she chose a wording that was tailored towards pacifying her boss in the context of their conversation.

The misunderstanding is expected.

They were extremely mature and communicative about the bodyswap.
And then suddenly became highschoolers drowning in basic drama immediately after, for 40 chapters until now.
