I mean the Aztecs and Mayans and other Natives of Central and South America used to make a fermented (alcoholic) cacao drink for ceremonies and stuff. The Spanish were the ones to claim it was an aphrodisiac when they introduced it to Europe, there is no evidence to back up that claim cacao itself is an aphrodisiac. To that logic anything alcoholic is an aphrodisiacNow I cannot see chocolate the same way anymore.
The chocolate being an aphrodisiac thing comes from the Spanish misunderstanding the Aztec's ceremonial fermented (read low % alcohol) cacao beverage. It is like saying those little chocolates in a shape of a bottle with 1 shot of alcohol is an "aphrodisiac" though the that's more alcohol than in the fermented cacao beverage. The real question is where in Fantasy China they got the cacao from cause that plant is from the Amazon Rain forest and Europeans didn't even learn of it until the early-1500s. I see this issue more often with tomatoes and potatoes being in fantasy ancient ChinaI still boggle about the chocolate thing. Does it really have that sort of effect, Lmao...
@Yori-chan I was surprised about Xiaojie too!! Apparently it really was the term used for courtesans in the Song Dynasty.
One of the cases in this series involved a crystal clear glass fish bowl. To my knowledge glass that are this unblemished is not a thing until maybe the 1600s? 1700s? Clearly this fantasy universe is more advanced despite the costumes looking like older dynasties. The chocolate being an aphrodisiac thing comes from the Spanish misunderstanding the Aztec's ceremonial fermented (read low % alcohol) cacao beverage. At first I misread crystal clear glass as "Crystal glass" and was confused because Lead glass is really old XDOne of the cases in this series involved a crystal clear glass fish bowl.
