so uh jinshi is the younger brother of the emperor? but like wasn't it indicated that he was the son of the noble consort that died (the one who was the emperor's childhood friend and was a tomboy) ??

page 5 : it is funny that the young previous emperor looks like an alternate version of jinshi .

page 12 :
  • previous emperor : you old , ugly hag , i dont like you anymore . now i like this little girl more , she is more younger , more prettier than you , lol , lmao , ha ha ha .
  • empress : now im mad . and it has been many years since the last time that i had some love-making , so now i will drag you to bed .

in the past , the hobby of the mother of jinshi was getting rid of his favorite toys .
now , will she also get rid of mao mao , the new toy of him ? lol .

I've been under the impression that jinshi was aaduo's son, but so he really is the prince?
Jinshi is definitely royalty and has some claim to the throne. Officially, the emperor has a brother and Aaduo's son was dead, and Jinshi is neither, but we know that is not the case. He is either the emperor's brother (and the empress's son) or son and (Aaduo's son). The implication in chapter 18 is the Aaduo's son was swapped with the empress's dead son (who is the result of the flashback in this chapter). In that case, Jinshi is also the empress's and previous emperor's grandson, which explains why there is still some resemblance in the Empress's eyes. She also refers to the child as "this kid" and not "my son". But, remember that the thought that there could be an actual swap was mostly Mao Mao speculating.

The alternative is that Jinshi is indeed the empress's son. She let people say that Jinshi is illegitimate (which explains his hidden royal identity) or that he was a swap (which explains why Aaduo thinks that Jinshi may be her's). Aaduo could also have an attachment to Jinshi as kind of a surrogate son. But it feels weird to me that the empress goes from loving her son, but then not being able to look him in the eyes without something happening. I'm betting on the former personally.

Well guess what, now the entire palace acknowledged Mao Mao. From the soldiers (acknowledged she has connection with Rakan) to the maids and servants (countless here and there occasions, and officially acknowledged by Rifa) and even the emperor (shrine of choosing). Getting approval of Empress Dowager is the best cherry on top

OOF poor jinshi looking like a pedo 💀
poor empress dowager too, thats one heavy stockholm syndrom (she kinda was sequestrated in the inner palace)
if theres the concept of hell in the manga, i hope the former emperor fell right into it, as well as his mom and every person condoning his pedophilia

I can't believed I listened to Still Love You by Kana Nishino while rereading this chapter. But what I hate is how unfortunately fitting it was.

Doesn't seem likely. This story is too grounded in realism for that.
But he is very much dead, and his body was so toxic that even bacteria wouldn't eat it. Take that as you will.

Thank you for the translation (even saying the former Emperor was a "joke of a man" is an understatement. He really was the whole damn circus through and through).

So, a bit of speculation here from something I just noticed while rereading and made me think...
In page 9, the Empress says there's a girl, daughter of one of the consorts, who was banished. Could that have been Fon Shen, Mao Mao's mother? From what we know of her back from Ch 37, it's implied she was raised in Hanamachi, and that her "not having a mother" was because of Hanamachi's rules against courtesans being mothers. But it's not stated explicitly, and early on the implication was that she was dead, so we've been misled by "technically true" statements before...
Also, it would kinda fit with Ch 54's ending. "Some people wouldn't be pleased with [Mao Mao being taken as a consort]" could be because she's basically a commoner, or because things would get really messy if someone found out about her lineage...
Furthermore, the novel's author, Hyuuga-sensei, seems to like surprising the readers and setting stuff like this up. For example, Ruo Men being Rakan's uncle, and thus actually a blood relative of Mao Mao's. So it wouldn't be surprising to get something like this.
Or maybe I'm going too far, I don't know.
