Yes, the MC wants to avoid getting killed as Ultos but the only advantage he has is his knowledge of the game. If he deviates too far from the original plot then he loses that advantage, and he only just started the game’s prologue.
He has already made some strides to improve the general opinion of him but all that stuff up till now wasn’t relevant to the actual plot. His interaction with the heroine and his presence at the Mayor’s Diddy party is, that’s why he’s going through with them, otherwise he’d just completely change the game’s original setup and would be going into the rest of the story completely blind.
