This chapter spoke to me. I grew up in a strong conservative household and wanted to dress up in Y2K fashion but my mother scolded me if I dare tried. Glad that it is back since I can wear the clothes I've always wanted to

"ripped" jeans aren't rly my thing (esp if u pay for bigger holes tho conveniently places ones on knees that makes it easy to bend [tho hopefully ppl wouldn't need to bend down/over in jeans too much]) but my parents def got mad at me for wanting to go to hot topic tho not like i ever rly bought much from there (tho parents def got uptight if i ever wore a shirt backwards or like mismatched socks even tho there are prolly 'mismatched' on purpose colors these days), i wouldn't be surprised if some celebs started wearing jeans under skirts again to balance out the skimpy stuff (to each their own but i def wouldn't wanna be photographed for the latter). Tho nice that there are 'cutesy' backpacks/purses versus just 'branded' backpacks that's like, smaller than a regular handbag XD

I love how delightfully simple when you see it as it is without people forcing their values on each other.

Huh, this chapter made me think of exactly that. I do wonder if Japan has, or is having these debates, but in a much more subtle way? It's common enough in their media that surely there must have been some discussion regarding it?
I'd be more surprised if that discussion hasn't come back up, given the discourse in the west.

I wonder what their general stance on it is, and what their opinions are of the western discourse are? :thonk:
And to anyone stupid enough to try, I'm not actually interested in discussing those topics, I'm interested in japan's views of these things, and nothing else.

I don't think its that common. All the glimpses you get here are from manga authors, it would be like trying to understand gender in the "West" by exclusively reading Tumblr.

From talking to friends and from what I've read, it's not that different from here. Being gay, trans or just different is going to be substantially easier in urban areas and there's still plenty of prejudice. Completely personal opinion here, but I think there's some variance in how gender identity is built: it's more common here to transition and try to immediately pivot into the gender you identify as, and in Japan "boymoding" is much more common and is rarely followed up with a full transition.

I would not say the world's largest comic industry, the worlds second largest animation industry (honestly, I'd argue they are the largest full stop), and their large video game industry (world's third largest), and their rather frequent uses of this 'trope' could be compared to reading tumblr... but maybe that's just me?

Interesting. Are there debates over this stuff like the west, or has the dust settled over there?
