I wonder if it's because I'm reading this back-to-back, with so many chapters already ready and waiting, that I'm not baffled, unlike many readers whom, I assume, needed to wait for the next chapter for an unknown period of time. In my eyes this has been 100% consistent with Kaede wanting to experience everything that she missed, due to moving so many times, in a childhood friends relationship. So, even if she has already fallen romantically in love with Kouhei, she can't agree to dating because that would be the end of active childhood friendship. They would be a couple, with being childhood friends relegated to being a memory. So, no matter what they did next, it would be doing it as a couple, not as childhood friends. It must indeed be due to marathoning the series that this was never a question for me.
