I find it interesting the translator calls the place a veranda. I'd call it a balcony. I always thought veranda is basically at the bottom level of the building, even if you needed to climb a few steps from the surrounding ground level. Consequently veranda would also be easily accessible from the outside. In fact in some designs you might need to go through it to get the front door of the house. Balcony, naturally, is higher up, only accessible from the outside if you are special forces roping down or Tarzan.
