I know the Japanese value their privacy, since I'm from a similar culture (in that respect), but don't the residents of the same apartment building in Japan greet each others in any way inside the building or immediately outside of it? Like if they happen to meet in front of the elevator or in some random corridor within the building? I thought the Japanese had cultural habits like taking some gifts to the neighbours when moving in. No such thing where I live, but you usually do acknowledge people's existence, even if you don't start to talk with them about the dreadful weather or something. In this chapter all the people acted as if the others didn't exist, except for the kid that was happy to push elevator buttons and check if the "gramps" had broken any bones wrestling with the steel doors.
