yeah. Honestly, I was really hoping for the male MC to see the news and just go full-blown crash-out mode. Just cut off contact with the neighbor entirely after "realizing" he doesn't have a shot. Move on, as it were. I get really annoyed at series where actions never have consequences.

Yeah it's a bit weird. People here are reading a goofy sitcom story but are thinking about it like it's real life.
