This particular obsession, yes. But elsewhere the... issue, is a lot of people idolize or otherwise blindly follow celebs in general.

For example, someone might be a famous singer, but yet that influence extends beyond music just because they're famous.

I guess you could say the root cause of both is the fans putting people on a pedestal and 1 set demanding their idol stay pure and the other emulating blind faith in their idol
