@Pen3 rather than that, the industry can only accommodate so much content for that large of a population. There are many good and successful stories buried under for that reason, be it xianxia/wuxia or mystery/crime or Slice of Life/Romance. And we also need to consider the average chinese author's life or any potential author's life. Producing such content and live alongside, in a society that values study and governmental jobs like any other Asian country won't help in their growth. I do think that Chinese market for Art Industry is much harsher than west, so they deserve their credit at least.
And if there were no one that read trash and revenge stories in west or southern globe, there wouldn't be translations of them, no? It is because they are consumed that they exist. No need to generalize a populace.
