Hello. I have a volume I want to upload. The scans are very high-res and the full volume is 600 MB. Normally I'd just break it up into chapter uploads, however this volume has no chapters. What else could I do?

I will question the need to have such high res scans. Remember that if each image is many MBs, people on mediocre connections will have trouble loading the images properly.

@Akacz13 and @Tranisassa thats doable. But then the 200 page volume will be split into 8 uneven files. Wondering if there's a way to compress this without hampering quality.

could be a good debate among the staff. what res is too high of a res. when each image starts getting over 10MB it can bog down a peasants internet connection. :p
Perhaps a solution would be a forum post to the software that optimizes images and the approved configuration for said software. I've been suggested to do that a few times in the power uploader chat on discord. I just find it too annoying to bother with it since i don't know what settings give the desired optimization.

Even so, absurd res images are a "minor" problem when it bloats things for no apparent reason. (unless you want that shit crystal clear on the non existent 8k monitor)

I mostly needed these scanned at an enhanced level because the paper size was standard and I didn't want people needing to lean into their screen to read the footnotes.

@T3Deliciouz If the images are too large, iOS users aren't even going to be able to see them because Safari refuses to render them

If you really want to make the full-sized scanlation available, feel free to leave a link in the chapter comments or something, but please spare the users from having to download half a goddamn gigabyte to read a few comics pages

Downscaling when

I've been uploading resampled 1280x scans from exh recently, considering load times and data usage. I link the source so those who want it can download the original full res, of course. I think that's a fair compromise, you could link to a mega folder or something for now.

You can try your luck with PNG-8 and taking the colours down to 32 or even 16 which will probably shave a bit off if you haven't already, and hopefully it won't make a difference at all to the image if it doesn't have too many shades of grey, (barely got a recent chapter of my own to 99.7MB that way).

@Holo
@Teasday

It'll obviously cost processing power/storage space, but resizing high-res chapters and offering a toggle (on by default for mobile shitters maybe) to view chapters resized instead of in glorious original, while allowing 100MB+ uploads for the high-speed-connection-desktop-master-race to enjoy, would make everyone happy I suppose. Presumably the bandwidth savings would help alleviate the extra overheads too.

But in all honesty:

It's not the first time that the option of offering downscaled images has occured to us, but writing the system hasn't really been workable so far. Maybe with the rewrite, although we have a lot on our plate as it is.

About (or over?) 2/3 of our traffic is phoneposters, so as much as I'd love to throw Safari support in the fire, not caring is unfortunately not really an option

I gave in and just broke it up into 8 parts. But I left a mega link in the comments.
