i've noticed that there seems to be some uncanny valley quality to the photos in this... it's hard to explain but it's definitely not right

It looks uncanny because it's a real photo then has a strong smoothening filter placed on it.

@anglade now that you mention it I do kinda see it...! If you've ever used Waifu2x (pretty good site for enlarging images without the weird crunchiness (most times, anyway)), it kinda looks as if you put in an image that was kinda hard for the program to enlarge, creating that weird smoothness
