On page 17, Utamaro tells his salaryman neighbor, "Offering the charms of a guy is my job..." This suggests that he's basically a gigolo, which makes sense: working as a private detective, an accomplished seducer could easily catch promiscuous wives in flagrante delicto.
In the very next panel, however, Utamaro says he's bitter about women, "'Cause of my face and glasses." This seems at odds with both his previous statement and his success in trysting with the beautiful adulteress whose infidelity he's been hired to prove.
I suppose the implication is that Utamaro's large "little something" (envied by the cucked husband on pg 15) / sake bottle (envied by the old salaryman on page 16) lets him ensnare loose and lonely women... But his odd looks and diminutive stature prevent him from keeping them or finding better partners? Something like that?
Interesting first chapter in any event. Looking forward to whatever comes next.
