I'm not saying that it was unclear that they're cousins. I'm saying that it functionally doesn't matter that they are, with how little the detail's used, how the characters interact, and how the rest of the story goes.

You could have inexplicably missed her being named as his cousin, assumed she was a neighborhood lady that's chummy with the family, and you wouldn't understand these characters any less beyond that misconception. That's how minor the detail is.

But Kazunobu was a good friend to Kokonee! He really reminded her that changing everything about yourself and still being uncomfortable is not the way to live life. Being genuine is a much better way to live life. Trying to be a cool beauty when you were a hyperactive tomboy is hard.

I liked Kokonee better with glasses and ponytail too, so props to her for returning to her old self!

Incidentally, a child born from a single generation of incest, even with siblings, has significantly less of a risk of defects than, say, one born from a woman over 40.

Yet no one is in an uproar about older women having children, or people with a family history of genetic defects, or any of the countless other entirely socially acceptable things you can do to greatly increase the chance of your offspring having serious problems.

Why? Because attacks on incest are the one remaining socially acceptable form of eugenics.
