This^ finally someone who gets it. Like I totally get being tired of a trope, but every reply in this thread so far is all bitching as to why this MC isn't instantly over his trauma. Like yeah this isn't high art on the level of Frieren but this actually has a purpose. Context is important him not speaking up doesn't come out of nowhere and its a deeply rooted thing after years of being looked down on, he isn't suddenly going to get over it. The girls also don't know him well enough yet to really understand what he's thinking in these moments and the next chapter or few chapters will probably have them talk it out. We're still in the growth phase of these character give it time.
I believe my issue right now isn’t due to his trauma and overall confidence in him belonging next to them, but the dumbass belief that he is weak. Not only does it keep going against all logic, it doesn’t work in the story as it has been going. He one-taps monsters two s-rankers beat slower, they already talked about his strength in an earlier chapter and literally everyone that has been regarded as strong (grandpa, the girls) see AND tell him that he is strong, but he still goes full japanese every 2nd chapter to see himself as weak

MC: Being OP

Also MC: oh noes they don't want me to fight. I'm so weak, i don't deserve to be here 😭

Seriously. Can JP author stopped doing this trope? It made the MC seems like an idiot.

they also still (from his POV) seem to sideline him, like they did twice here in this very chapter. But his interpretation is not what theirs is, and even though he is powerful now, his historic treatment by everyone around him would have a lasting impact that's hard to shake when even those he trusts & considers allies seem to actively prevent him from participating.

It needs to be a conversation between them, which - again, contextually wouldn't be his strong suit. But the other two aren't exactly communicating either, so. "two-way street" and all that.
But its not like he's entirely sidelined. The girls let him fight the frog monsters on some of the dungeon levels. But it's just really baffling that he quickly concludes that the girls arent letting him fight because of power level difference when he oneshots mobs and bosses just like his peers. He already fights with them on equal footing yet he doesn't see it.

I don't really mind the fact that his confidence is still an issue. I'm just not buying into the reason of WHY his confidence is still an issue.

I was surprised by the fact that the girls were wearing pants. In manga, mangaka tend to think that girls are immune to the cold in their legs…
Pantihose supposedly helps, so "naked" legs in cold seasons can be a thing - but there is limit to that.

So people get jelly cause he has girls around him, badmouth him, girls hear it and decide to vent by killing monsters on their own. MC is trauma rich idiot and reads this as them not needing him "cause he is weak" or something. So basically a version of typical stupid manga "misunderstanding" to continue the plot.

Of course he's not going to speak up, because that'd make sense and would be a healthy social skill, which mangaka hardly seem to know.
"Speaking up" about anything is considered a form of socially risky/unharmonious behavior in JP. Such risky/inharmanious behavior is viewed as a form of "purposefully standing out" which is considered a social faux pas. Tell me how many manga/ln/etc. have you seen where the protagonist, at least initially, constantly hammers the audience with the adage of "the nail that sticks out gets hammered down?" Moreover, "not making your problems other people's problems" is considered virtuous behavior; which is fine when we're talking about random strangers, but is often taken to the extreme of including even close friends and immediate family. It's a society where people would rather "disappear," whether by suicide or absconding into the night, than ever admit to others that they're struggling with the issues they're facing. So let's not put the blame for these awful cultural norms only on one small group.

Let's also not forget that just a couple of days ago, he had to be stopped from accidentally killing a classmate he formerly regarded as stronger than himself, and also very easily brushed him off and left him disabled when he was attacked. Actually, looking back on that and his reaction to it before the situation was brushed aside, there's a distinct possibility he might be actively averting his eyes from the reality of his strength, which would be a much more interesting turn of events than the current surface-level miscommunication drama that's brewing.:thonk:

The MC is right, he doesn't belong with them. He's a monster wearing human skin pretending to be a weak little lamb going oh woe is me at every opportunity. Nearly murders his classmate then goes oh I'm not strong enough to hurt him. Disgusting. If it wasn't for him hiding his strength by total accident he would be shunned and feared by everyone other than the two wives he has.

Your rules do not apply here.

This is a very real thing that happens to real people and has real consequences in real life. And it says "Fuck you sideways with a cactus" to any type of logic that states "But you have no reason to feel that way!"

Anxiety and depression are real diseases, and like any disease, they will not be satisfied until your are dead - either through suicide or by health complications. That is not hyperbole, that is an absolute.

And for those who suffer from these diseases chronically? There are no magic bullets for this. You are never "cured". It is something you can easily relapse into. It is something that is baked into the actual neurons in your brain, and there is fuck-all anyone can do about that.

It lurks in your head. It whispers in your ear. It makes those suggestions that make you second-guess yourself constantly. It tells you that you're a fraud and a charlatan. It always tries to bring you down when you're at your highest. It never goes away. Instead, it just waits for the right moment to strike.

It is a living hell. It is a constant battle. And it will exhaust you, no matter how much mental fortitude you have. Because even if it can't get through your mighty walls, it'll just dig out their foundations instead.

The author/mangaka has decided to write about this thing, and they are doing fucking fantastic job of deconstructing the typical fantasy and polycule-romance tropes - where even if it's a dream come true, where two beautiful, powerful, but flawed girls from the most powerful families in the world both love you and adore you for who you are and they both want to work together to make sure you are loved, you are still going to feel that you're not worthy of them because anxiety is a fucking monster that way.

Trust me. I'm taking some very strong antidepressants, and sometimes all it can do is just take the edge off. If someone wants to be my wife? They absolutely must be 100% committed to pulling me back to safety when I'm at my worse, and they must be prepared to do so at a moment's notice.
