I interpreted that scene more like.
MC: Do you know how much thecrystals cost
Lady: States the market price.
MC: But then why.. ( is the price your giving more only around a third the market price)
He got angry and yelled about the cost of the crystals. The question was meant to show he was aware he was getting swindled. The "But then why..." question in context was asking why she was doing it if she did know the market value. That's why she went into explaining why.
Also I'm saying more detailed information such as how much it cost in the black market in a specific random city might not be available.
My point was never about him getting specific information that would be so detailed he would know her prices. No, he could've gotten enough information to not look like an obvious outsider who obviously never talked to the person he name-dropped about black market deals. He could've thought it through, which he doesn't do much although I suspect the author thinks they're making him look smart, but he could've done some decent research to be moderately prepared. Heck, he could've went around and tried to buy some stones off of the black market to see what they'd be priced first.
To be blunt, I grew up around drug dealers. I know they each sell their drugs at different prices based on where they live and who is their overhead. So, yes, it'd change, but you can get an average street market value for a particular drug. I also know that to learn that, you have to go ask or buy it or grow up around that or go to look it up in legal stuff to find out from law enforcement when they do raids or investigate. It's all the same. My point is MC had information at his fingertips and a real thinking person would likely consider one or two of these options for information if not all.
Only someone so out of touch with reality and so sheltered, IMHO will walk into a black market like that. Or maybe that's just cause I grew up on the streets.
