The running gag of Ichijou getting the dorkiest practical presents ever from what are essentially dollar stores has me in stitches. He's just like me fr!!!

It's so very sad that he's cut them off though... But maybe for the best. They're all way too kind for his manager persona, it would've destroyed them

Also wow, Misawa has become really good at reading the room!

The saddest part is yet to come, he will drag down Murakami with him, we all know it. Not even intentionally, just because Murakami is a good friend and he will follow his bro.

We're heading into such a tragic climax... but by having his freeter life end on such a high note, it's preserved forever as this shining happy memory. It really informs how we see him act in Kaiji.

The sad part about all this is that Ichijou thought these friends were a weakness to him, but they were the ones keeping him in check and helping him to go through life. Ichijou needed brother figures like Murakami and Misawa to go on a less conflicted, less self destructive path, and to grow out of his toxic habits and worldviews. Ichijou is a great character, but a very flawed person with a superiority complex that proved to be fatal to him. He should have looked up to the simple but kind people in his life, since they were always looking out for him.
