Linux Foundation banned Russian maintainers

If you are not familiar with the subject already,

As a linux nerd, I just wanted to know your opinion about this.

And yes, I know that this is an highly political stuff,
and I should probably put this in the news thread but I though this more of an tech and programming subject rather than a news one.

Spoiler: my personal opinion

To begin with, It's sad to see that a big Open Source Project like the linux-kernel is now taking some political side.
Imagine being a open source russian developer who work and maintain a kernel driver since 2005 and after 19 years, the code that you put effort in is now taking away from you.
Well, you may say that happen all the time you know? ,
yes. but the linux kernel is not a simple user script that 10 people on github uses, it's the software that is being used in most server.
So, It's an important software.

I am wondering how the left over code will be maintained now.
Not gonna lie, If people someday give me money to maintain this code, even if it's the gouvernement, i will not do it man.
I don't want to shoot myself on the foot with some C code.

6.11 barely works with nvidia, and as if they have such disposable manpower, that russians are banned now.

The problem isn't just with Russians. It's a core problem that comes with any open source project. Jonathan Blow predicted it years ago.

I don't think it's healthy adopting this attitude. I had plenty of good colleagues from India and China. Who said that developers from western countries are all working for the betterment of mankind? and what prevents developers from the countries you listed in working from western countries?

In the same vein, Kaspersky and other russian anti-virus are banned in Europe, from basicaly everything. In some case, even Tik-tok is banned for certains professions, you can't use it if you have certains jobs. Better safe than sorry.

Not sure about Linux, since the code can be audited, but it's kind of understandable anyway.

I don't see the point, man. Kaspersky is a corporation, and those Russians they are banning are individuals that could be anything from a peaceful nerd in his basement to a top tier KGB hacker. You can ban a corporation, but you can't discriminate against a race - that's racism. Even in the US there are plenty of Russian and Chinese employees. On the other hand, western corporations are accountable to the western jurisdiction and that's why we don't ban them. But these guarantees fall apart when you're looking into a pull request from a random western developer.

I distrust Russian developers as much as I distrust the western.

Jonathan Blow raised this concern years ago, when he said that open source projects are very vulnerable to this kinda exploits. And frankly, I can't imagine any solution to it. You can consult the video I posted for some insights.

Nope, linux is not made for everyone nor to be centered around a community. It's about user's software freedom as stallmann could explain it better than i could.
