It seems to me like Albert killing himself was him going for a checkmate on making Varian the next leader.

-Killed the "obstacle"
-Knew Varian's behavior and making him charge in after him before his father.
-Practically admitted to be the mastermind, and then killed himself to prevent inner fighting.

Not condoning him, but he knew what needed to be done and did it without hesitation.
