surprisingly, you are not that far off.

its later shown that Angela is a "pure soul" witch gives all who have it strong holy powers.
in her chase, it manifests in a ability to tame any creature and the ability to communicate with them.
basically she becomes a beast master who can tame and controll monsters that can level cities by themselves by the end of the story.
This does however put a giant target on her back as the church usually recruits people like her to train them into saints.
And as you can see, most of the church is both powerfull and corrupt beyond belief.
Not to mention finding strong monsters is hard.
