This kind of development used to be more common back then, didn't it? An accident or some sort of tragedy befalls the protagonists and suddenly they're reminded that their time is limited and that they should make up their minds lol. Maybe it got overused and that's the reason you don't see it as much, i don't mind seeing it here. It may be sudden but the writing for this manga is stellar so i'm enjoying nonetheless. The accident though, the sudden drama of it all... A bit funny I think. But as said, probably a common trope for works of that time. And the story is great anyway.
