I've recently tried getting into proper shoujo series from the utter deluge of those villainess stories. Unfortunately, most of what I came across was kinda uncomfortable to read. It seems that the standard shoujo male lead is this possessive, creepy douchebag that gets away with downright stalking and assault because he's hot. A perfect example is Namaikizakari - I thought that since the mc is this strict, no-nonsense girl(unlike your average wet blanket, like Kotoko from Itazura na Kiss) it would be an interesting read. Unfortunately, it turns out the male lead embodies every goddamn negative stereotype in the book. He doesn't even change his expression, it's just this constant ikemen glare. The "doki-doki' scenes made my skin crawl, most of them were sooo creepy. I know there are folks out there who like this sort of thing, and that's perfectly fine. It just really isn't my cup of tea.
I did enjoy a few series, though. Here are some examples:
3D Kanojo - I just watched the anime adaptation. It was allright.
Tonari wa Nani o Kuu Hito zo - Manga about cooking. Very chill, has likeable characters, main couple is adorable. Chapters are still coming out regularly.
Shitsuji-tachi no Chinmoku - I like that the butler is the MC and he doesn't mince words on just how annoying it is to deal with a dumb, spoiled teenage girl. Art is gorgeous!
Koi Dano Ai Dano - One of the best series I've read! Kanoko is a fantastic mc, Tsubaki starts out like your standard super-possessive creeper, but grows out of it over time, the side characters are pretty good, the story's pacing is just right, it was simply an awesome experience. I think the only bad part about this series is that it raised the bar too high for me, so others feel mediocre by comparison. There is a new manga from the same author coming out, I'm definitely following that.
This and this are a couple of comedies I found myself chuckling to.
Other than that, Kaichou wa Maid-sama came up on my radar. It seems it was popular back in the day. Is it worth checking out? Can you guys recommend me other shoujo series that stray away from the uncomfortable elements that put me off? And no villainesses, please, I'm really burnt out on them.
