Well, that's what you should do. But some people have trouble expressing that, so they need some shortcuts.

And yeah, the humour here is a bit farcical. We know they could get along much faster if they just are themselves and try to see how that works, rather than following instructions that, while generally helpful, hinders them in this specific case. But so far the misunderstandings are fairly light, and not up to the level of, say, Sheriff Evans.

Aka did not come up with the 5 Ss of backchanneling, it's a thing that is fairly known among japanese people. It also seems to be quite popular with women. I remember seeing an interview a couple of years ago where a VA taught someone this technique and it was pretty much identical to what we saw this chapter.
