It was probably a mix of things, it's rarely one thing that causes a decision like this. The core was clearly her increasing lack of desire or drive to learn styles and aesthetics she had no interest in that sucked the joy out of creating art for her. That feeling likely compounded with her growing guilt at amount of effort her parents were having to do for her to study art and getting ready for college, especially as she was enjoying art less and less. So when she hit that wall with Xu Ke and spent the night working on her portrait her thoughts all crystalized into her decision to give it up as a career.
