It's hard to tell whether this is something real, some kind of supernatural phenomenon, or just some kind of artistic dream/fugue state. We'll probably find out next chapter, but I can't help wondering if that will lead to just as many questions as the previous few chapters have . . .
But . . . . that kind of crowd and all the chanting and so forth, around a confession? There's something seriously wrong with that, and equally wrong with the boy who's ignoring the situation and continuing. Feeling like she's drowning in all the emotion and the pressure from the crowd is entirely natural, even without any supernatural help.
I have to say, though, the butterfly imagery makes a nice change from flowers, even if the censorship is still stupid. Maybe there's a thematic element to it . . .
