Well, why is it labeled as shoujo ai? In the franchise, there has never been a romance and it has never gone beyond the subtext as fanservice, not to mention the fact that the concept of both real and anime idols can not include romance. ?

[ol]1.It's Kimino Sakurako sensei. So if you knew her works then you can at least expect what can happen. I mean depend on the person i guess.
2.Although the anime may does seem like just purely idol like and not a single hint of romance, you can tell the subtle and not so subtle subtext.
3.The manga however is vastly more open with a huge subtext.
4.with all that taken to account ALONG with if you look at the list of songs of μ's... especially the 3 songs theres more but those are the most... yea... really...if its not romance filled i dont know what is *cough*GardenofGlass*cough*AnemoneHeart*cough*ZuruiyoMagneticToday*cough*[/ol]

But honestly those concept that idols cannot date is stupid imo tbh I'm just saying.

1. What the author wrote in the past yuri LN "Strawberry Panic", does not mean that all her works is yuri. She also wrote a pseudo-incest series Sister\Baby Princess with a bunch of imoutos and generic male MC, is that also yuri? Not to mention the fact that both "Strawberry Panic" and "Love Live", she wrote as a hired scriptwriter. For example, quite a long time ago ToraDora and Golden Time's author wrote a script for yuri visual novel "Noel", does this mean that her two light novels are also a yuri? I do not think so.
2. I know very well that many all-female or all-male show have a certain subtext and Love Live is considered yuri shipping's sacred cow in the West. But the subtext in itself does not mean anything, and even Okazu called this anime nothing more than ship-bait.
3. Again, the subtext is not equivalent to the real presence of yuri in the work. And very often the subtext is a banal inclination of the fans to treat any interaction between the girls as romantic. For example, I saw how the yuri subtext was found in one scene only because the death of the best friend caused horror in the girl.
4. They are idols, it is perfectly normal for them to perform songs heavily laden with romance. Moreover, the whole genre of jpop idols is based on a variety of love songs that are so designed that the listener perceives them as a song for him (her). You forget that Love Live is not just a musical anime, but a multimedia franchise, part of which is idol music.

You can think this is stupid, but this is the basis of the concept itself of idols and in fact many CGDCT animes where girls are deprived of any real romance to create the illusion of the virgin maidens and generate waifu-bait. And that's not even talking about how the Japanese like to idealize friendship and write best friends as a kind of platonic "romance" with a bunch of melodramatic tropes. This is one of the reasons why sports shonen initially unintentionally became a strong yaoi-bait for fujoshi.

Anyway, it's quite obvious that as a commercial franchise with a all-female cast, Love Live has a certain subtext to attract shippers and yuri fans, in order to expand the audience and create a long-term interest in the work. But this is part of the marketing strategy of many original franchises and does not mean that the work really is a shoujo ai. Not to mention that unlike Strike Withes or Symphogear, Love Live has never made yuri fans its main focus.
