They are scummy, but perfectly legal in the US.

Feels like this same plot could happen everywhere else. She's not going to jail, but people would start considering her a swindler and give her the cold shoulder.

lowkey same. If I remember correctly, he hates her because his mom (?) got scammed by this pyramid scheme MLM company that MC worked for. She doesn't want him to tell everyone about that, so I guess she wants to gain his trust by getting into a relationship with him and guarantee his silence that way?
