Odd is the best way to describe this manga. In it we see Yuuhi, a college student with a hatred of the world from childhood trauma, be selected as one of twelve Knights to fight for the Princess Samidare, who Yuuhi falls for, and Anima against Amimus, who seeks to destroy the world. Through eleven volumes, the Knights build up their strengths and commect with eachother for the fight against Animus.
This felt much like a shounen manga despite being nominally seinen with its theme of beauty in the Human Condition, this defined as seeing humans and life as something that should be lived for. The premise of knights, mages and some "great duty" felt really cheesy, even for shounen and certainly for seinen. The character developments for each knight relate to the theme, with each seeing the character develop some better love for the Human Condition from them. The final battle follows this, in effect becoming a sibling clash being Anima, who enjoys humanity and Animus, who disregards it. In the end, Animus decides, after having been a omnicidal monster for 1000 years, to reincarnate in the past and seek knowledge as the Master from previous chapters.
The manga felt predictable, even with the sudden plot twists dispersed throughout. The message was pushed too much throughout, with not enough show to the author's message. I actually find the manga's emotional climax with the eleventh golem, whose goal of learning more about the Human Condition brought me some sorrow when he died, the only character I really cared for when they died. I was promised a grand masterpiece, something that would change the way I see the world. This is not that, rather its a action shounen with poor attempts at sounding like its some philosophical masterpiece.
The redeeming aspects of this are the story flow and Yuuhi's development. Despite being predictable, it really felt like a fully planned story from start to end. Every chapter went at the right pace. It didn't feel the story was being made just for an extra dollar but rather the author genuinely had a story to tell. I have not once seen that in any manga I've read, even my personal favorites. As for Yuuhi, he undergoes a stark transformation throughout as he frees himself from the chains of his parents and forges his own destiny through companionship, becoming an adult in the process.
On a last note, I am biased against this piece. I dearly enjoyed AiON and Invading the World All Alone, and see this piece as a threat to the love I have for these first two mangas. With that being said, I can still rank this manga with that in mind.
8/10.
