I don't like when authors do romance and are like "Oh they were in love in middle school but didn't have the courage to confess and never talked again" because fuck you author I know it happens to all of us but I want to see a side story of how their lives would've been if they started dating in middle school and had a happy life together.

While I broadly agree that being needlessly tragic about it in other works sucks, I do feel like this was trying to make a different point, because the characters themselves don't seem hung up on the unfulfilled romantic aspect and don't think of their time together as wasted.

So far this work has been getting closer than any other manga I can think of to representing "a different kind of 'mutually unrequited love' that's comfortable/satisfying rather than tense/unresolved." Maybe it's me assuming too much, but as I read this chapter I wasn't sad that they didn't hook up back then, because that endeavor would have been doomed from the start - neither was in a place to make it work. Instead, they wound up being irreplacable to one another in a way that wouldn't be enhanced just by slapping a title like "friends" or "lovers" on it.

I think their history gives them a connection to the past through one another via which they can restart their stalled lives. And drip-feeding us the past and having us/them learn about their present at the same time is important to how the story is told.

I'm really glad this piece has been exactly what it is so far.

You're just objectively wrong, as Jesus not only affirmed the remarriage of a hypothetical widow but explicitly said that the covenant of marriage doesn't transcend the boundary of life and death in Luke 20.

I know that if my spouse survives me they wouldn't be able to 'forget' me if they tried; and the only thing of mine that I want them to 'honor' is my wish for them to be happy, whether that means remarrying immediately or not.

I thought the comments will be hell to read at first but I am really glad everyone else was mostly mature about it. You guys restored some of my hope in humanity.
Also I disagree about this being comfortable/satisfying unrequired love. It is less tense than others yeah and I am happy about that, but I'm sure there'll be some not quite comfortable feels around how they could've ended up together back then and helped each other before things went south... aaand also she was married. There's no way neither of them has any feels about that and I feel like there is some regret already about not realizing what was between them in the past.
