Given how poorly the mystery component of the series was handled, I shouldn't be surprised at the rushed and unsatisfying way it ends; there's been no time for investigating it at all, and for the story to slightly trivially toss off child abuse like this is quite jarring. I did tear up a little bit at Théo and Pete's goodbye, though.

Overall:
  • really lovely artwork
  • anything about Théo and Pete was great, and given that's what sold me on the series in the first place I'm satisfied with that storyline
  • pretty much none of the other characters rang true for me, particularly Linoa and Emma
  • the mystery was underwritten and inconsequential

I'll be keeping my eye out for another "mystery" series for a future project, but probably not another series by Hagino. Any suggestions that aren't, like, Kindaichi Spinoff #50, or seinen ultraviolence, gratefully received; something more serialised rather than episodic cases would be what I'm thinking of.

Had it's flaws, but was a charming story otherwise. Appreciate the sorta underlying bittersweetness of this ending.

Thanks for translating this to the end, nice to get the chance to read odd works like this!

Wow, I loved it. It's exactly as the author intended, a short story with a good ending. I loved following the story. Thank you for translating this entire manga! :hearts:

If this being wordy wasn't an issue for you, might wanna look into classic espionage/spy books (if military themed subterfuge is fine by you).

Dunno if you've read/watched naoki urusawa's stuff but he usually writes quite addicting thriller mangas, though the pacing can be off at times what with how some chapters end with a new mystery plot line being revealed. (That said i think a suggestion of an order of his authored media to consume would be Pluto, shortest and referrential but gives you a more predictable and structured narrative written by him, it ends up reading/watching like an episodic detective series that has an over arcing mystery given the setting, it becomes rather evident what that mystety is; Monster, one of his more known works, probably his earliest one that's the most grounded in terms of setting, the dub is pretty good if you're a fan of videogames as they have a bunch of big names casted as relative unknowns at the time; and my personal addiction was 20th century boys, mightve been the pandemic, my lack of medication, or wanting a cathartic story about insurmountable odds being over come but i really liked it when i read, enough to finish all of it within 12 hours of starting chapter 1)

Er, wait... won't Turk be in trouble now? What the heck, Theo?

What for? The only thing Turk should be in trouble for is for deliberately sabotaging the original investigation when he suspected Linoa killed Otto (something that, like most things to do with the mystery here, gets almost instantly glossed over). Theo's novel is a work of fiction; no-one is really saying Turk killed Otto.

I originally bought Madobe no Linoa because it looked and sounded like an Urasawa series. Loved all of those!

Well fuck, guess we're in the same boat hungry for some good mystery thriller shit, rip.

My favorite moment of his is after he finished 20thcb and 21stcb the same fair intergral to the plot in a different year he performs THE guitar song live, and knowing how unassuming he looks, and how he just looks like his protagonist in 20/21 mustve been some ethereal moment for his fans to have witnessed live.

Overall the manga is pretty fine. Still have some plot holes though.

The manga didn't explain jackshit why Emma couldn't have custody over Linoa after the dad's death.

There is one line of dialogue that suggests Otto made up an allegation that Emma had been mistreating Linoa, but the idea that she both lost custody and visitation rights never made any sense - particularly in Europe in the early 1990s, when generally speaking it was far more difficult for men to gain exclusive custody of their children then women.
