Chapter 4 and I finally started to understand what this wants to be. At least supposedly. It's so unusual to read Aka manga where the action scene takes up almost the entire chapter and clearly flows into the next. It looks like we've really gotten not so much the expected "fantasy romance" as a superhero story in the style of Swamp Thing in a Dark Fantasy setting. Now it remains to find out what Mikel's situation really is.

every time he's added a "serious" component to his other works it became way too edgy & needlessly self-indulgent... and now he's writing his most tonally serious work yet. Low hopes for this if the story doesn't shift hard in the next few chapters

Pretty neat chapter. I like Mikel's weird tree vine powers. The combat scenes are pretty meh, but it wasn't too boring.

Honestly, though, is anybody else tired of the "prince on the white horse actually being evil" subversion? At this point, it's a bigger subversion if you play it straight and actually make a character that's a literal prince on a white horse.
