As I've said before: The story fell apart when Jin pretty much destroyed this world's illuminati and turned it into some kind of magi-craft U.N or something.

There just wasn't any drive anymore once the big bad magic Akatsuki was demolished.

To put it in Naruto terms: We're in the Boruto-verse now.
