im guessing higher ranking kokhwa or magi are given different uniform or a uniform similar to kafna. Karin is a kokhwa yet he wears kafna's uniform (minus tikeeka/necklace adornment and the headdress except one time when he try to confront Theo). and Yoh seems like a money grubby kinda guys as he try do to things within the job scope or less(if possible). if he is a kokhwa, it make sense as he is a highly gifted magus (strongest wood magus within central library) from the academy and he seek employment with the kafna as a mercenary/Kokhwa so he get paid higher than normal kafnas that often got paid pittance when compared to other professions like scholars or magi.
i believe magi from the academy seek employment outside from their walls kinda like a mercenary to nobles and government to master/refine their arts. like Alv sister-initiate who became the Magi of the Desert (a Kadoe) that serve as bodyguard to a the Kokopah leader/Queen.

magi wearing robes (like kafna) unlike the more melee fighting kohkwa makes sense.
though I'm not talking about that , but Yoh's position: like he is already deputy-captain of the 2nd unit (chapter 37) despite only being in protections for a few years at most (he and alv didn't look much younger in chapter 43) and he is the one with authority to remove karin from guard duty (in chapter 24), but nils (kafna) doesn't have that authority.
Also, Yoh's overall intellectual ability definitely seems to be comparable to other kafna (geniuses): like he is famous as a calligrapher in chapter 42, and is skilled in plant-care.

Oh, shoot. Well this is embarrassing. I spent forever on that line because I thought it was Yoh speaking to Alv and it didn't make any sense. Which is silly because the speech bubble is pointing to Alv. Not sure how I missed that.
But it says, more directly, something like, "I heard my brother became a captain/leader at the library" and I thought that was a euphemism for becoming a Kafna, because I didn't know what other kind of leader Alv could have become or would get accepted to become. (And there's other terms for kafna/kohkwa already in play like Kohkwa are called "assistants", so I figured this was just like that again.) But because Alv is speaking, and knowing the context of Yoh, it's probably then that Yoh was promoted to a command role within the Kohkwa hierarchy.
Well, shoot. I greatly apologize for that. Such a silly mistake to make too. That was the first chapter I ever translated and I was still figuring out a workflow. Guess I missed that speech bubble somehow back then. I'll go ahead and fix it and look through the rest of that chapter to see if there was anything else I missed. My workflow is much more refined now.

This chapter was great. I like how, despite Theo harming her plans, Karin is upset Theo isn’t part of protection; like she acknowledged his talent.
Oggha jumping to Theo, while calling his name, and Theo catching her is a great reference to how they reunited as trainees back in ch 15

makes sense, I originally thought the kafna in front are from 'other offices', but after checking official translations , they are all protections office. I'm surprised that protections have that many other kafna when we've only seen Nils, mahuia and the stewards
is it confirmed that Karin is a girl (looks like Karin has breasts this chapter) ? or is Karin's gender still unspecified? I think you're misinterpreting Karin's intentions, karin still hasn't accepted Theo in chapter 44 so Karin likely wants Theo close by to bully/convince Theo into driving away Cynthea.
