This story reads like a metaphor for racism, and the moral is "some races are better than others, love between classes/races is immoral".

I read the whole thing waiting for the main guy to redeem himself, he doesn't.

I'd be angry if I saw someone treating a normal animal how the "beastmen" are treated in this, let alone an animal that appears human except for ears and a tail.
