Oooookay I can see why this may have been a little difficult to translate over to anime. I mean, putting an omake vs cutting to a side story in order to abruptly cut the tension functionally does the same thing, but IMO I think it made more sense and fit better in manga form, since it's more common there. What by definition should have been extraneous information that rarely actually affects the main story actually was super important, so by doing so it felt more surprising. In anime, if a side story is dropped in the middle of an episode and there's still a lot of time left, even if viewers don't consciously acknowledge it, there is a slight inkling that perhaps there's something more going on
