Shouldn't the translation notes be at the end rather than the beginning?

One small note, zhenniao are a real (not IRL real) mythological creature, not just in SMT. It gets its poison by eating serpents! We also got a real (irl real) birds that use toxins from its food as a defense mechanism, but they're not nearly as large or deadly as zhen

Calling someone male or female in English is also rude in certain contexts. Like you know those incels that call men "men" and women "females." So I guess even if it's not quite one to one, the slight unintended rudeness is still there

So female unicorns are basically just horses? Maybe it's a safety feature, cause if female unicorns can just keep pumping out foals after mating only once, if they're too obviously unicorns they could be captured by those damn humanoids. And how does the male unicorn die upon doing the do. Do they just lose all of their magic power in a single load and then collapse or are they cannibalistic horses

I think that the “slow-witted Uketsu/Human Murder zone” video must be a parody of the series by Uketsu called Hen na Ie
(it’s about noticing things that are subtly “off” about floor plans).
there’s a manga adaptation of it here, for the curious. and the novelization got an English release recently.

Depends. You can choose to ignore TN notes until the end of chapter, then reread the whole thing again or multi-task like side scroll idle game, refering to the wiki while playing the said game.

It really depends on the preference of both reader and Translator.

Regarding the male or female part, and while I get what you mean, this is different. As I've explained, オス and メス are 'male' and 'female' words for animals gender/sex only in Japanese. Using them on a human is a rude insult as saying they are an animal. its more about this connotation than that connotation. Like メス can be used to mean 'bitch in heat' or 'dumb bitch' or 'pig'. Basically, low form of life.

From what you said about Zhenniao, i assume you understand Chinese? Then to simply put, this メス and オス is literally in Chinese '母' and '公'.
Korean also share similarity with 수컷 and 암컷.

With all respect, putting those TNs at the beginning is a bad decision.
a) It may spoil the chapter.
b) The reader does not know the context, so they won't really get it and will probably not absorb the information.
c) The reader will probably not go back to reread them after they get the context.

It made me remember how manga translator 20 years ago did it, when they still gave a fuck about what they were doing. We had 1/2 pages at the start of the manga of pure Japanese lore to explain every jokes we couldn't understand otherwise.
