@Wolvenworks you are correct that the Imperial Family is even less active publicly (and politically) than the British Royal Family. It is actually to the point where they pursue side careers in other things. For example, the retired Emperor Akihito is a marine biologist with published papers and research (included non-Japanese journals, so they aren't just sucking up to him). That's a pretty good indication right there that they spend much less of their time being royals. (Although I don't think much of his active career as a scientist was at the same time as being emperor, but it clearly shows that being Crown Prince took up a lot less of his time than being Prince of Wales probably does.)
