Additionally the second line「もう昔のことですから」 doesn't have to be "a long time ago", but with the first line being "a few years" then it would make more sense to translate it as "it's in the past anyway".

It's easier to coax readers into rooting for your characters by making you feel sorry for them rather than actually writing interesting characters.
