I’m never not amused by how Japanese MCs in manga are denser than a neutron star.

Well, before reading the Novel, I kinda thought the same, but after reading the Novel, I kinda understood why he is like that.

Author...this is YOU made him, if you don't like it then change it, you don't get to complain about things over which you have complete control, is like if I complained about cooking something I don't like for myself.

He was trying to be disliked by everyone, while also solving situations in a way that boost Akira's reputation (as for why, that was explained in th Novel and will be explained in manga down the line). So, because of his time spent with Charlotte, he started to change and when he saw her crying, instead of indirectly solving the problem, he did it himself.

As for his obliviousness... I can't explain it since it would have A LOT of spoilers
