Is a bit weird for MC to react like that, is more than normal for a kid to like anime, I find unusual that Japan still uses that cliche and have some hiding it out of shame, the incident that caused anime otaku to be seen negatively in Japan was many years ago and the effect passed, it was the media that put them in a bad spot but now anime is seena unique resource from Japan and is normal to love it.
Make sense for a character that wants to be pereived as mature or straightlaced, not so much for a quiet kid.
