He’s not used to such close affection from people other than his mom, so the fun had with Iruma and Clara is really new to him!!
Yeah, I'm just teasing, mostly.

I'm just admonishing him to remember that he was indeed born at that time in this world.

You can't become the OG! You must be guardian and confidant.

But Mafiameri seems to be filling out a delta with Iruma and Clara, which surprised me.

I didn't think she would butt heads with Clara too much, but I didn't expect her to be chill with sharing a date with her, and certainly didn't expect them to have a MOMENT! Trio 2.0?
I didn't expect an Ameri to swing that way. OG Clara has dropped hints, but she's never done anything that indicated she knows. She's got two men, and a full schedule of classes and training and family and she can't fly (limiting mobility, complicating scheduling. I walked with a heavy limp for a couple years, and wow it changes things)

Anyways, he can go turn Ifrit to the other side and have a much less healthy relationship if he wants something.

"Now, now... Just chill. Play with the kids, but... just chillax.

Haha I personally am all for him still being close friends with Clara and Iruma, age difference be damned. It’s pure with them, anyway :3 (though I do ship the three in the main series). I think it’s nice that he gets to have a fluffier friendship with them than with Ifrit. Ifrit, although playful and silly with Azz, was also more on the serious side. It didn’t seem like they got to be as cute with each other like Iruma and Clara just because Ifrit’s a different kind of person. Being in the mafia has been emotionally enriching for Azz methinks.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the newtrio we have with Ameri, Clara and Iruma!! I think they’re very cute together. I was never all that interested in Ameri x Clara in the main series, but they’re so compelling in this one! I can’t believe Ameri just needed to be involved in a little more crime to finally like girls (I joke). And you’re right. I think Clara would only realize she liked girls if she had a solidified crush on one. It’d be nice if her and Ameri could grow closer in the main series too… Iruma could have the biggest (forgot the word for one where mostly everyone is dating each other) polycule in a mainstream(?) manga ever if Nishi was bold enough!

Sorry Azz, you’re too old to be included in the love this time around. Also you’re onto something here with him and Ifrit… I’d wholeheartedly dabble in it if I weren’t so attached to them as brothers! The way chapter 17 was titled “Sibling Spat” made me fall in love with that interpretation (nothing against incest shippers if that’s part of the appeal for you though! Just not my thing.)

And ooh, I can’t say that I’ve ever had mobility issues, but it’s really neat how you have a greater connection to Clara that way :D

Be crime do gay?

And as someone with multiple genetic disorders, I have some things against incest shipping.

Edit: seriously, though, there's some kind of move being made of people trying to normalise incest, and it's freaking me out.
That way lies extinction.
"But there's such a low chance of defects in X case" it compounds.
I'm Ashkenazi Jewish. We are a 3000 year case study in why you don't marry and breed with your cousins.

Taye-Sacks disease, digestive problems, (primarily vascular, the worst kind of) EDS, myopia...

Inbreeding is BAD and is inevitable once you normalise FUCKING YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS.

I will literally die on this hill, if I have to. Gd willing, I don't.

Seriously, they should have aged Iruma up too, like make him 16 at the start. The way Alice behaves would still be weird—a 20-something year old guy stalking and collecting photos of a kid he's not related to...—but it's funny everyone around Iruma is way older than him. Even Clara got aged up. I guess Ameri is still the same age as the og, and maybe Kiriwo got aged down since he and Iruma are supposed to be peers?

But anyways, back to Alice, his... devotion... does make a lot of sense considering his past. Ifrit isolated Alice, shaped him, and became his justice and the only one he can rely on. While doing so, Ifrit convinced Alice that he was hopeless, worthless, tainted. Alice's whole world is giving his life for just a single ideal. He simply moved on to Iruma and Babel.

Even though Ifrit kept trying to prop himself up as Alice's "older brother", I don't feel like that's their dynamic at all. I think Ifrit is just trying to justify himself by saying, "I'm the only one looking out for you, you have to rely on me". At some point it becomes clear he doesn't really see Alice like family, but he also doesn't view Alice like a lover or a friend or his property either. It's something much more complicated than that. Especially when he made that face in the hospital, I felt then that Ifrit is gonna be like Alice's Kiriwo if that makes sense.

I don't like how relatable this is.

Yeah, because this Kiriwo is more twisted, and less Joker/Batman and more... A Separate Peace.

(That book is AWFUL, by the way.
Allegedly meant to be about one thing, but the author apparently wrote toxic BL in the 1920s by accident. Every single person aside the teacher in high school saw it)

And let's all bask in the wild fact that this dark, less-fantastical, manga exists because of a stupid pun.

The best way I can sum up Ifrit and Alice's prior relationship was "normalized obligation".

robin faithfully fulfilling his role as the snack police! how precious, I wonder how his cousin bachiko will be represented
also! I envy ameri for that belly band, I have a rather cold constitution so I've always wanted one, something more like the one Zoro wears, but the only ones available to me are moreso body shapers (can't personally wear anything non-breathable)

I think this is a solid understanding of their relationship, and I definitely agree with it!!! I’m sooo excited to see what moves Ifrit will make in the future if he does continue being someone akin to Alice’s Kiriwo because Kiriwo’s chapters have been insane (and I really yearn for more development on Azz’s bloodline magic in the main series so I hope to get it here…) but I just really like familial relationships, so I have that kind of biased lens on when it comes to more personal interpretations is all hehe.

It really is so fascinating seeing how Ifrit regards Alice so impersonally, in a way. Alice really is just walking potential to him and not like, a proper person within his inner circle that he’s even slightly vulnerable towards. I really like the idea that although Alice could tell Ifrit never truly meant that brother thing, and he never fully thought Ifrit was a brother to him either (i.e., calling him Ifrit-senpai and not nii-chan/aniue/Ifrit-nii or something), but I really like to think that Alice was comforted by his presence as a mentor. Alice hasn’t indicated that he has wanted more family since his mother left his life, but I like to think that Ifrit’s efforts to establish himself as an older brother specifically, as opposed to a plain mentor, worked a little :D

I do wonder how self-aware Ifrit really is. Like, is he actually just lying to himself all the time? Does he believe the things that come out of his mouth? Or is it all manipulation? A bit of both, maybe. I think the one time we see his true feelings is when he tells Alice, "I need you." and yet there he is pointing a gun at him. He should by all means be able to detach himself from the "tool" he crafted, but he can't. Alice is his biggest weakness. Even after he switches sides, Ifrit still can't let him go. They're like inseparable.
