With how cheeks rifles of that era are to reload, taking a shot at closer range and switching to bayonet is perfectly sensible.

...Actually wait, she's using a more modern SMLE type Enfield rifle than either of the pattern muskets that were relevant to her time period and historic event (rebellion partially caused because the powder cartridges you bite on to load the 1853 Enfield contain beef or pork grease to seal them which is a no-no in the religions present there)...
