The author is bold to aboard Christianity in this way, this could led to the manga to never get an anime adaptation (considering the western market)
“Considering the western market” we have like twenty anime per year who go “the church is secretly evil” and Evangelion was the king of adding nonsensical Christian imagery in there

Legit this series has more thought put into the concept of Christianity than any “Christian” media barring Veggie Tales

It’ll be fine. Stop being a worrywart

I have some theories:
1. This entity inside the priest (possibly sloth) is taking advantage of his vulnerable state by making him believe that he is an old friend and is trying to manipulate him
2. The priest does harbor a lot of hatred, as we saw when the lord of the flies entered him and the one who expelled him is this entity.
3. This means "destroy the world" in a more figurative sense. In that the side of the witches, though most have commited horrible crimes, some started due to feeling abandoned and mistrided by those on the side of the "church" which may actually be just the fault of humanity acting horribly. And the is the side of the church who acts in "gods favour" but only wants to keep the status quo of the world (that's why demons keep reviving humans keep being horrible) and are welling to also do horrible things like abuse a child. And so "destroy" comes more as breaking this lines between demons, witches and humans (realizing they are all not so different being "far from god's love")

I have literally never seen, or at least cannot recall, a single anime or manga where the Church is represented as not being corrupt or outright evil if it is mentioned at all. But I can recall plenty that are actively anti-church. The "western market" also has plenty of media about this. This isn't the taboo you imagine it to be.

Assuming that the demon is Belphegor, which represents sloth, it might be tackling how depression is considered related to sloth depending on who you ask. One symptom of depression is a lack of will to do anything (or sloth). One could argue that between protecting the world, changing the world, and destroying the world, destroying the world is the option that requires the least amount of effort.

All that, and even now, the Japanese are principally concerned about the Japanese market. Their success metrics are preeminently domestic, and the way they interpret them is likewise inclined. The sensitivities of the American Western market wouldn't factor into this getting an anime adaptation. If anything, it would just mean that American dubbing companies would be reluctant to get the distribution license to this (which... good, because they'd almost certainly fuck up something like this).

Evangelion was the king of adding nonsensical Christian imagery in there
Those were Ultraman references, which means that they were only Christian references by proxy (because one of the creators of Ultraman was Roman Catholic).

This manga is one of more positive in general depictions of Christianity I've seen in Japanese media, at least among manga that actually delve deeper into the whole theology and meaning of the religion instead of treating it as just story decoration. Your concern is really weird.

"Abloo bloo bloo, we cant do whatever degen shit we want"
Miss me with that demon loving shit
The manga: Literally depicts the Church staffed by zealots and child abusers who have hurt innocent children (including sexually abusing one of the main Witches in the series and torturing the main protagonist himself to break him into a weapon to "save" humanity) and the Good members of the church (including the main characters) are not able to get rid of them at the moment.
You: "Stupid degenerates whining about how they can't do whatever they want!"

I guess Chainsawman isn't the only fandom that has problems with the Reading Comprehension Devil :pacman:

There is no shortage of anime that play fast and loose with Judeo-Christianity
While there are many manga / anime that approach "the church" in some way, they usually avoid direct references to Christ itself due to how "controversy" this might be to specific (mostly western) audiences. Works like Evangelion, Ao no Exorcist or Platinum End, while fleeting with some Christianity elements, don't reference Christ directly.

I personally can't remember any mainstream work that did that (outside an obscure seinen maybe), specially one with an anime adaptation.

It’ll be fine. Stop being a worrywart
I'm personally an agnostic, but I don't blame you if you thought that this is a sensitive topic for me. I'm just aware of how "general audience" perceive those topics (which doesn't mean I agree with). I'm actually happy about the author boldness in this case

It's true, but don't think they ignore the western. There's a difference of "not being a priority" and "potentially alienate paying customers", which is a calculation studios do.

It's ok to not agree with anything I've said, I'm just want to point out that there's a reason that Jesus Christ and Mohamed aren't "Fate servants" yet(?) while Buddha is

Jesus could be a Servant and most people wouldn't care. At most, a vocal minority would complain on the internet, but that would hardly affect sales. Come to think of it, one obscure seinen manga that does portray Jesus was Judas. That was a trip. As for Muhammed, that would immediately lead to extreme violence for reasons that are obvious to anyone with even the barest minimum knowledge of major religions in general.

I don't think you're actually aware how "general audience" perceive this topic. There is a comedy manga "Saint Young Men" about funny roommates Buddha and Jesus, and it didn't cause any controversy at all while selling in the West, it actually got anime adaptation as well. Pedo or slave owners MCs are getting popular anime adaptations, as do age gap love stories including student-teacher romance and it's far, far more controversial in West than mostly positive depiction of Christian religion that also cast some doubt at its accuracy.

Prachett was atheist who also made the whole "religions are sustained by faith of believers", as did many others in Western fiction, and plenty of Christian people love his books too. Almost no one in the West would actually had problem with this manga, in fact I'm sure many even among religious people would be interested by the discussion of morality of the actual exorcists.

I disagree with that, most of the church members are clearly trying to do good thing while literally risking their lives and often dying horribly to demons to protect innocents, and while MC was tortured at least that corruption was noticed later and situation corrected by the church itself, which is rare enough even in IRL corrupt organizations, and it had at least excuse of desperation caused by horrible loses.

On the other side, demons cause horrible suffering - just what Leah went through was far more horrible than any abuse shown by the worst members of the church - and yet witches worship them, and we saw witches in one chapter making ritual with tons of murdered people put on some spiky poles around fire, so they commit horrible crimes as well. I'm an atheist and ex-Catholic in country known for pedophile affairs hidden by the church and yet I would still be instantly on their side compared to what we've seen of the witches so far.

So do you.
Did i excuse whatever bad thing the church was doing? No. Demons and witches were shown to do horrible things for their own amusement so I'm not inclined to like them.
And there is a big difference between the beliefs of the church and the church as an organization. What the human agents of the organization do may not always adhere to the beliefs themselves, because they are human and can err. Call out the bad actors and don't equate them with the beliefs themselves.

If this is really Sloth I wouldn’t expect him to be so active and especially not being able to drive Gluttony out, Sloth has always been seen as the weakest sin out of the 7

My personal theory is that this is either more likely to be ol’ Lucy himself as in Pride, being that he would destroy god’s creation and install their own world order or

Amd this is coming out more left field, if the entity refers to the destruction of the world in the literal sense of an Armageddon type situation I’d say it’s an Angel of some kind perhaps Azrael the Angel of Death which could be interesting
