Nah this worked better imo. One of the main attraction of this series, along with how weird the dude is, is the mystery of "how did this seemingly well-adjusted, well-education, respected member of society have such a weird...habit". Letting the readers to question it and hope as many of them sticking around to wait for the explaination is logical
